Frequently asked questions

Whether you have more questions or are ready to schedule your first session, we are here to support your journey towards greater wellbeing and self understanding.

Do I need a GP referral to book an appointment?

No, you do not need a GP referral or a Mental Health Treatment Plan to book a private appointment with us. Anyone is welcome to book directly.

However, if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a valid referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP prior to your first eligible session.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You don’t need to be in crisis or have a specific diagnosis to benefit from psychological support. Therapy can be helpful when you’re experiencing emotional difficulties, navigating life changes, feeling stuck, or simply wanting to better understand yourself and your patterns. We can discuss what you’re hoping to get from therapy during your initial appointment.

How do I make an appointment?

You can contact us by email to enquire about appointments and availability. Your psychologist can then assist with booking your initial appointment and guide you through the next steps. We’re also happy to answer any questions you may have before booking, so you can feel comfortable and informed about starting therapy.

What if I’m not sure what I need help with?

That’s completely okay. You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Your psychologist can help you explore what you’re experiencing and identify areas you may wish to work on.

Can I choose my psychologist?

Where possible, we aim to match you with a psychologist who is suited to your needs, preferences, and goals. If you feel another psychologist may be a better fit, you’re welcome to discuss this with us.

What should I expect during my first session & how should I prepare?

Your initial appointment is a collaborative conversation where we get to know you, explore what has brought you to therapy, and discuss your personal history and goals for treatment. There is no need to prepare anything formal or have all the answers. We will work together at a pace that feels comfortable for you, building a shared understanding of your needs and a plan for moving forward.

How long are appointments?

Standard psychology appointments are typically 50 minutes. Your psychologist can discuss session length and frequency with you based on your individual needs.

How often will I need to attend?

This varies from person to person. Some people benefit from weekly sessions initially, while others may attend fortnightly or less frequently. Together, you can decide on a frequency that suits your needs and circumstances.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a support person if this would help you feel more comfortable. We understand that having someone you trust with you can make starting therapy feel a little easier. Please let us know beforehand so we can ensure the appointment is comfortable and appropriate for everyone involved.

How much does a session cost, and what is the out of pocket fee?

Fees vary depending on the service provided and whether you are accessing rebates through Medicare or private health funds. For a detailed breakdown of our current fees, Medicare rebates, and gap payments, please visit our dedicated fees page or get in touch with us.

How do Medicare rebates work?

With an eligible GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare currently provides rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year. Once your session is paid in full, we can process your Medicare claim directly on your behalf for immediate rebate processing into your nominated bank account.

Can I claim Medicare or private health insurance rebates?

Yes. To claim a Medicare rebate, please ensure your GP referral is provided before your appointment. If you have private health extras cover, you may be able to claim a rebate directly through your insurer without a referral.

Please check with your health fund to confirm your level of cover. Please note that you cannot claim both Medicare and private health rebates for the same session.

What is an embodied or somatic approach to psychology?

Embodied and somatic therapies acknowledge that psychological stress, trauma, and emotions are held and experienced in the physical body and nervous system. In addition to talk therapy, we integrate practical nervous system regulation techniques and body aware mindfulness to foster deeper, lasting healing.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?

We understand that circumstances can change. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Cancellation fees may apply for appointments cancelled with insufficient notice.

What is your cancellation policy?

We request at least 48 business hours notice if you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment. This allows us time to offer the session opening to clients on our wait list. Cancellations made with less notice will incur a full cancellation fee.

What is Embodied Psychology's approach to therapy?

At Embodied psychology our approach is grounded in the understanding that our experiences shape both how we think and how we feel in our bodies. Stress, for example, may show up as racing thoughts, muscle tension, a tight chest or difficulty settling.

In therapy, we explore what is happening in your life and, where helpful, gently bring awareness to the physical responses that accompany your experiences. This can deepen your understanding of yourself, help you recognise patterns, and support the development of strategies that feel meaningful and effective for you.

You do not need any prior experience with body focused approaches. We move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, with your preferences, boundaries and sense of safety guiding the process.

What if I feel nervous or hesitant about starting therapy?

It is completely normal to feel hesitant or anxious about opening up to someone new. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out; simply letting us know you would like support is enough.

Therapy is a collaborative process where you have a clear say in how we work together. If something does not feel right, we encourage you to let us know so we can adjust our approach.

Where are you located and do you offer Telehealth?

Embodied Psychology is based in Gawler South, South Australia. We offer both in person appointments at our practice and secure online telehealth consultations for clients across Australia.
